About Sons Minoxidil 5%
- Sons Minoxidil 5% is a topical scalp solution used to treat male pattern baldness.
- Minoxidil 5% is a clinically proven ingredient used safely for several decades.
- Minoxidil is one of the most effective over-the-counter treatments for early to moderate hair loss.
- Minoxidil solution is licensed for men up to 65 years and beyond this age is provided ‘off label’ by Dr Fox.
- The solution is applied twice daily to stimulate hair follicles and support regrowth.
- Regular use helps slow further thinning and maintains existing hair growth.
- It can be used alongside finasteride tablets for combined, enhanced treatment results.
- It is also available to use combined with finasteride solution in Hair Growth Spray.
- Read the manufacturer's patient leaflet for a full list of side effects, cautions, and interactions with other medications.
How does Sons Minoxidil 5% work
Minoxidil stimulates hair follicles by increasing local blood supply around the root of each hair, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to reach the follicle. This helps hairs move from the resting phase into active growth more quickly and remain there for longer. Over time, this results in thicker, stronger, and more visible hair strands. Minoxidil also helps prolong the life cycle of existing hairs to slow down ongoing thinning. Most men notice reduced shedding within 4-8 weeks and visible regrowth from 8-12 weeks, with maximum results around 6-12 months.
How to use Sons Minoxidil 5%
- Ensure hair and scalp are dry before application.
- Apply 1ml (10 sprays) of solution directly to the thinning areas of the scalp twice daily.
- Massage gently into the skin.
- Wash hands immediately after use.
- Allow the scalp to dry completely before going to bed or applying styling products.
- Continued daily use is needed to maintain results.
Sons Minoxidil 5% Dosage
- Sons Minoxidil 5% - 1 Month Supply (60ml): Ideal for first-time users wanting to begin treatment. One bottle provides approximately 30 days of twice-daily applications.
- Sons Minoxidil 5% - 3 Month Supply (3 × 60ml): Recommended for new users aiming for early results. Most men see first improvements within this timeframe.
- Sons Minoxidil 5% - 6 Month Supply (6 × 60ml): Best value long-term course. Helps maintain consistent treatment for sustained results.

Alternative treatments to Sons Minoxidil 5%
Available from Dr Fox:
- Finasteride 1mg tablets - taken daily to block DHT, the hormone linked to hair loss
- Regaine 5% Foam or Solution - branded alternative using the same active ingredient and in a foam application
- Dr Fox Hair Growth Spray - combination treatment containing finasteride and minoxidil (not for use with other hair loss medicines)
Not available from Dr Fox:
- Oral Minoxidil tablets - not currently licensed for use for male pattern hair loss with a higher risk of side effects and no evidence for improved results compared with topical use.
- PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy - uses your own concentrated platelets, derived from a blood draw, injected into thinning areas of the scalp to stimulate dormant hair follicles, promote new growth, and increase hair thickness, often requiring multiple sessions and maintenance treatments, and is considered a natural, non-surgical option. This can be used alongside the above treatments.
- Hair transplant - a surgical procedure that moves healthy, DHT-resistant hair follicles from the back/sides of your scalp (donor area) to thinning or bald spots.
