About Blissel vaginal gel
Blissel contains low-dose estriol (0.05 mg/g) and is applied directly into the vagina to relieve:
- Vaginal dryness, irritation, or soreness.
- Discomfort during sex.
- Urinary symptoms such as urgency or recurrent infections.
Each 1mg application dose of Blissel gel provides 0.05mg estriol. The gel works locally, meaning minimal absorption into the bloodstream. This reduces risk compared with systemic HRT. No progestogen is required, and it is unlikely to affect the womb lining.
Who can use Blissel gel?
Blissel is suitable for women with local vaginal or urinary symptoms of the menopause. It can be used on its own or alongside systemic HRT. Blissel gel is a lower strength vaginal oestrogen than Estriol 1mg/g and Estriol 0.01% so may be best suited to women looking for a lower strength option or when stepping down treatment.
Women advised not to take systemic HRT should consult their GP first. Dr Fox's medical questionnaire ensures safe use.
How to use Blissel gel
Start: Apply every night for 2 weeks.
Maintenance: Use 2 nights per week, spaced 3-4 days apart.
Application steps:
- Attach the supplied applicator to the tube and fill with gel.
- Remove the applicator from the tube.
- Insert the applicator into the vagina like a tampon.
- Press the plunger to release the gel.
- Clean the applicator for reuse.
If unable to use the applicator, or there is significant soreness at the entrance to the vagina and to the vulva, the dose of gel can be applied with a fingertip at the vaginal opening and on the vulva to relieve external soreness or used in this way if unable to insert the applicator. Wash hands thoroughly after use.
Blissel gel cautions
Although only a minimal amount of vaginal oestrogen is absorbed into the bloodstream, manufacturers advise caution in women who have been told not to use systemic HRT. Doctors may still prescribe vaginal oestrogen where benefits outweigh risks.
Any unexplained vaginal bleeding after 3 months of use should be assessed by your GP.
Blissel gel interactions with other medicines
Blissel gel rarely interacts with other medicines. Avoid using it at the same time as other vaginal products.
Possible side effects of Blissel gel
Side effects are uncommon but may include:

- Abdominal discomfort or mild vaginal discharge.
Stop and contact your doctor immediately if you notice:
- Signs of allergic reaction.
- Yellowing of eyes or skin (jaundice).
- Severe headache or migraine.
- Swelling, chest pain, or breathing difficulty (signs of a blood clot).
- High blood pressure.
- Pregnancy.
Patient Information Leaflet (PIL)
The Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) is the leaflet included in the pack with a medicine and must be read before taking the medicine. It is written for patients and gives information about taking or using a medicine.
