About Vagirux
These pessaries contain a small dose of 17-β oestradiol (10 micrograms), a form of oestrogen that is identical to the hormone your body naturally makes before menopause.
After menopause, oestrogen levels drop. This can cause the skin in and around the vagina to become thinner and drier, which may lead to:
- Vaginal dryness or soreness.
- Pain or discomfort during sex.
- Increased urinary symptoms or more frequent infections.
These changes are sometimes called genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).
How Vagirux pessaries work
The oestrogen in these pessaries works locally in the vagina and very little is absorbed into the bloodstream. This has several benefits:
- Treats symptoms where they occur.
- Lower risk than full systemic HRT.
- No need to take additional progestogen.
How to use Vagirux vaginal oestrogen pessaries
Initial use: Insert one pessary tablet every night for 2 weeks.
Maintenance use: Insert one pessary tablet twice a week (every 3-4 days).
- The pessary is inserted at the top of the vagina using a small applicator.
- Vagirux comes with a reusable applicator — load the pessary each time, wash and dry the applicator after use, and replace it after 24 uses.
- Insert like a tampon and press the plunger until you hear/feel a click. The pessary dissolves and releases oestrogen where it's needed.
Who can use Vagirux?
- Suitable for most women with menopausal vaginal and urinary symptoms.
- Can be used alone or alongside systemic HRT.
- Although the risk is much lower than full HRT, women advised not to use systemic HRT should speak to their GP before using these pessaries.
- A short online medical questionnaire with Dr Fox ensures treatment is suitable.
Vagurix interactions with other medicines
- Vagirux is not expected to interact with other medications.
- If using other vaginal products (creams, pessaries, gels), use them at a different time of day.
- Pessaries do not affect condoms, unlike many creams and gels.
Possible side effects of Vagirux
These can include:
- Mild irritation if the applicator is used roughly.
- Headache, abdominal discomfort, vaginal discharge, spotting, or soreness.
Stop and seek medical advice immediately if you notice:
- Signs of an allergic reaction.
- Yellowing of eyes or skin (jaundice).
- Severe headache or migraine.
- Swelling in one leg, chest pain, or breathing difficulties (possible blood clot).
- High blood pressure.
- Pregnancy.
Important: If you experience vaginal bleeding after the first three months of use, contact your GP for a review.
Further details are in the manufacturer's patient information leaflet (PIL).
Patient Information Leaflet (PIL)
The Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) is the leaflet included in the pack with a medicine and must be read before taking the medicine.
