About Hana

  • Hana is a progestogen-only contraceptive pill.
  • 'Hana' is a brand name, the active ingredient is 'desogestrel'.
  • Recommended starting dose is one 75mcg tablet taken daily.

What is Hana?

Hana is a progestogen-only contraceptive pill containing 75 micrograms of desogestrel. It is taken once daily to prevent pregnancy and does not contain oestrogen.

How Hana Works

Hana prevents pregnancy by:

  • Suppressing ovulation in most women.
  • Thickening cervical mucus to block sperm.

Effectiveness

When taken perfectly, Hana is over 99% effective.

How to Take Hana

  • Take one tablet every day at the same time.
  • Start a new pack immediately after finishing the previous one.
  • Do not take a break between packs.

Starting Hana

  • Immediate protection if started within the first 5 days of your period.
  • If started later, condoms must be used for the first 48 hours.

Missed Tablet Advice

  • Less than 12 hours late: take the tablet as soon as possible.
  • More than 12 hours late: take the tablet when remembered and use condoms for 48 hours. (Emergency contraception is needed if unprotected sex occurred).

Bleeding Changes

Bleeding patterns may change. Some women experience irregular bleeding or no periods at all. This is expected and not harmful. Bleeding usually improves after taking the pill for 3 months and continues to improve the longer you take it.

Side Effects

Side effects may include:

  • Headache.
  • Breast tenderness.
  • Nausea.
  • Acne.
  • Changes in mood.

Who Can Take Hana

Hana may be suitable if you:

  • Cannot use oestrogen-containing contraception.
  • Are breastfeeding.
  • Are overweight (BMI 30).
  • Suffer with migraines.
  • Smoke and are over 35.

Who Should Not Take Hana

You should not take Hana with the following:

  • Allergy to desogestrel.
  • Allergy to peanuts or soya.
  • Lactose intolerance.
  • History of breast, ovarian, or uterine (womb) cancer.
  • Liver cancer or severe liver disease.
  • Current thrombosis (blood clot).
  • Epilepsy.
  • Tuberculosis.
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding.

A medical review is undertaken to assess suitability.

Additional Information

Hana does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
