About Utrogestan
Utrogestan 100mg is a soft gelatin capsule containing micronized body-identical progestogen. It is taken orally alongside oestrogen HRT for women who require womb lining (endometrial) protection.
Utrogestan is chemically identical to the natural female hormone, progesterone.
The capsule should be taken at bedtime as food can affect its absorption and it can cause drowsiness.
Any woman who still has a womb and takes oestrogen only HRT, may develop thickening of her womb lining which can lead to endometrial cancer. This risk is reduced by taking progesterone as well.
How to use Utrogestan 100mg
Continuous HRT - to be taken when periods have stopped for over 12 months, after 5 years of sequential HRT use or aged over 54. Swallow one 100mg capsule of Utrogestan with a glass of water at bedtime alongside oestrogen HRT. Once established on the HRT there should be no bleeding.
Sequential (or cyclical) HRT - to be taken if periods have occurred in the last 12 months. Swallow two 100mg capsules of Utrogestan with a glass of water at bedtime for 12 consecutive days each month alongside daily oestrogen HRT. A bleed occurs a few days after the Utrogestan is stopped.
If continuous HRT is started too soon, before the body is ready, then there may be irregular bleeding. If this happens and does not settle after 3 months then changing to sequential HRT is recommended.
The patient information leaflet mentions slightly different regimes but these are the most commonly used.
Utrogestan 100mg is only for use alongside oestrogen HRT, and the manufacturers advise that it should not be used in any situation where HRT would not be recommended.
The Mirena IUS (and other IUS containing 52mg progestogen) can also be used by women alongside oestrogen to provide HRT progestogen for 5 years.
Utrogestan and other medications
Utrogestan may affect the same other medications as all HRT. Checks are done in the online assessment.
In addition, there are some extra medications which may be affected. If you take Utrogestan and are on any of the following medications please check with or tell your usual doctor:
- Bromocriptine (Parkinson's disease, pituitary gland).
- Oral treatment for fungal infections.
- Spironolactone (water tablet).
- Some antibiotics.
- Medroxyprogesterone acetate, megestrol (antisteroids).
- Warfarin type blood clot medication (those requiring regular blood tests).
- Diabetic medicines.
- ellaOne emergency contraceptive.
- Tizanidine (multiple sclerosis).
Allergy
Utrogestan contains soybean lecithin and should not be taken by anyone with soya or peanut allergy.
When to stop Utrogestan immediately
Utrogestan and HRT oestrogen should be stopped immediately, and a doctor or optician consulted if there are any sudden new significant problems with vision or your eyes. Also stop Utrogestan, if there are any other reasons for stopping HRT.
Patient Information Leaflets
The Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) is the leaflet included in the pack with a medicine and must be read before taking the medicine. It is written for patients and gives information about taking or using a medicine.
