About Winlevi cream

  • Winlevi 10mg/g cream 1% is a prescription topical medication to treat acne.
  • The active ingredient clascoterone is an antiandrogen, reducing hormone activity in the skin which can help reduce oil and inflammation.
  • Winlevi is applied to the affected area twice daily.
  • Read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects, cautions, and interactions with other drugs.

How does Winlevi work?

Acne can be driven by hormones that stimulate the oil glands. Winlevi has been shown in studies to work directly in the skin to block those hormone signals, which can lower oil production and reduce inflammation around hair follicles. Because it is applied to the skin, systemic (whole-body) exposure is low compared with oral hormone therapies.

Who can use Winlevi?

Winlevi is a prescription medicine for people 12 years and older with acne, Dr Fox only prescribes for over 18s. It can be used by men and women from adolescents to late adult onset acne.

Who should not use Winlevi?

Do not use Winlevi if you are allergic to clascoterone or any of the other ingredients in the cream listed in the patient information leaflet.

How to use Winlevi?

  1. Wash and gently dry the skin where you will apply the cream.
  2. Apply a thin layer to the affected area once daily, not just the spots. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth or inside the nose.
  3. Do not use on cuts, broken skin, or open wounds.
  4. Wash your hands after applying.

If you miss an application, apply it when you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double-up. Apply to the affected area twice a day (morning and evening).

If you use more Winlevi than you should on your skin, you will not get rid of your acne any quicker, but your skin may become irritated and red and you increase the risk of side effects.

Discard the product after 6 months.

What to expect with Winlevi treatment?

Days 0-2: Possible mild redness or dryness as your skin gets used to the cream.

Weeks 4-8: Some improvement in reducing red spots may appear.

Weeks 8-12: Full benefit in trials was evaluated at around 12 weeks.

If after 12 weeks of use, the acne has not cleared then stop, look at trying another treatment or arrange a review with your GP or dermatologist.

Side effects and cautions

The most common side effects are to the skin and can include:

  • Redness or irritation of the treated skin.
  • Dryness or scaling.
  • Itching.
  • Burning sensation.

If you experience severe irritation, uncommon allergic reactions (hives, swelling), or symptoms suggesting systemic (whole body) steroid effects (unusual tiredness, weight changes, dizziness), stop use and contact your doctor or call 111.

If you have an infection or are undergoing surgery, tell your healthcare provider that you are using Winlevi, as this increases your risk of systemic steroid effects.

As this is a new product any side effects experienced when using Winlevi should be reported to the MHRA yellow card reporting site.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

There is limited information about use during pregnancy and breastfeeding and it is not licensed for use in these situations.

Other acne treatments

Topical treatments include non prescription benzoyl peroxide, available over the counter from a pharmacy. Prescription topical treatments include retinoids such as Differin cream and gel containing adapalene, which reduces blocking of pores by reducing skin shedding or Epiduo gel which is adapalene combined with benzoyl peroxide.

Antibiotic treatments for acne include Zineryt erythromycin lotion, Duac, which is benzoyl peroxide combined with the antibiotic clindamycin or oral lymecycline capsules.

See Dr Fox Treatment plan for further advice.

Some women find that contraceptive pills help improve acne.

People with severe acne including scarring, may benefit from seeing a dermatologist to consider Roaccutane (isotretinoin) tablet treatment.

Winlevi cream FAQs

Can men use Winlevi?

Yes — clinical data include both male and female patients. Because Winlevi works locally in the skin, it can be used in males and females aged 12 and older as prescribed.

How much cream should I use for each application?

Only a thin layer is required. The manufacturers advise that approximately 1 gram, which corresponds to 2 fingertip units, is used twice daily. This should be enough to cover the size of one adult face.

Can I use other acne products at the same time?

Combining topical products could lead to an increase in skin irritation so is not recommended. However if other products are being used, they should be applied at a different time of day. It can be used when taking lymecycline tablets.
