About Estriol 1mg/g cream
Estriol 1mg/g cream, previously known and branded as Ovestin, contains estriol 0.1%, a low-dose form of oestrogen applied directly inside the vagina. It helps relieve:
- Vaginal dryness, itching, or soreness.
- Discomfort during sexual activity.
- Urinary symptoms such as urgency or infections.
How does Estriol 1mg/g cream work?
After the menopause, the body produces much less oestrogen. This can cause thinning and dryness of the vaginal tissues (vaginal atrophy), leading to symptoms such as dryness, soreness, itching, pain during sex, urinary symptoms, and recurrent infections.
Estriol 1mg/g cream replaces this oestrogen which can improve moisture and elasticity of the tissue in the vagina and urethra.
As estriol works locally in the vagina, and very little enters your bloodstream, making it much lower risk than systemic (whole body) HRT and you do not need additional progestogen. It can be used alone or alongside systemic HRT.
There is 0.5g of cream in each application of estriol 1mg/cream delivering 0.5mg estriol per dose. This is the same dose as estriol 0.01% but delivered in a smaller volume which may be useful where local irritation or burning are more prominent symptoms rather than dryness and causes less leakage of the cream after application.
How to use Estriol 1mg/g cream
Start: Use every night for 2 weeks.
Maintenance: Use 2 nights per week, with 3-4 days between applications.
Application:
- Screw the applicator onto the cream tube and squeeze to fill.
- Remove the tube, insert the applicator into the vagina like a tampon.
- Press the plunger to release the cream.
- Wash and dry the applicator for reuse.
If unable to use the applicator, or there is significant soreness at the entrance to the vagina and to the vulva, the dose of estriol 1mg/g cream can be applied externally with a fingertip to these areas. Wash hands thoroughly after use.
Estriol 1mg/g cautions
Although only a minimal amount of vaginal oestrogen is absorbed into the bloodstream, manufacturers advise caution in women who have been told not to use systemic HRT. Doctors may still prescribe vaginal oestrogen where benefits outweigh risks.
Any unexplained vaginal bleeding after 3 months of use should be assessed by your GP.
Estriol 1mg/g cream and other medicines
Estriol cream is unlikely to interact with other medicines, but avoid using other vaginal products at the same time.
Estriol 1mg/g cream possible side effects
