About Cerazette

  • Cerazette is a progestogen-only contraceptive pill.
  • 'Cerazette' is a brand name, the active ingredient is 'desogestrel'.
  • Recommended starting dose is one 75mcg tablet taken daily.
  • Take at the same time every day.
  • Read the patient leaflet for a full list of side effects, cautions, and interactions with other drugs.

What is Cerazette?

Cerazette is a progestogen-only contraceptive pill (often called the mini-pill). It contains 75 micrograms of desogestrel and is taken daily to prevent pregnancy. Cerazette does not contain oestrogen and is suitable for many women who cannot use combined hormonal contraception.

How Cerazette Works

Cerazette prevents pregnancy in two ways:

  • Mainly by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg) in most menstrual cycles.
  • Thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to pass into the womb.

Effectiveness

When taken perfectly, Cerazette is over 99% effective. Effectiveness is reduced if tablets are missed or taken late.

How to Take Cerazette

  • Take one tablet every day at the same time.
  • Do not take a break between packs; start the next pack immediately after finishing the previous one.
  • Tablets should be swallowed whole with water.

Starting Cerazette

  • If started within the first 5 days of your menstrual cycle, contraceptive protection is immediate.
  • If started at any other time, additional contraception (such as condoms) must be used for the first 48 hours.

Missed Tablet Advice

  • If you are less than 12 hours late, take the tablet as soon as you remember and continue as normal. Contraceptive cover continues.
  • If you are more than 12 hours late, take the missed tablet as soon as possible, continue taking tablets daily, and use condoms for the next 48 hours. Emergency contraception is needed if unprotected sex has occurred during this time.

Bleeding Changes

Changes to bleeding patterns are common. Periods may become irregular, lighter, more frequent, or stop altogether. This is not harmful and does not mean the pill is not working and often improves after taking the pill continuously for 3 months.

Side Effects

Some women may experience side effects, including:

  • Headache.
  • Breast tenderness.
  • Nausea.
  • Acne.
  • Mood changes.

Who Can Take Cerazette

Cerazette may be suitable if you:

  • Cannot take oestrogen.
  • Are breastfeeding.
  • Smoke and are over 35.
  • Are overweight (BMI 30).
  • Have migraines.

Who Should Not Take Cerazette

Cerazette may not be suitable if you have certain medical conditions, including unexplained vaginal bleeding or some hormone-sensitive cancers. A medical assessment is required before use.

Additional Information

Cerazette does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Patient Information Leaflet

The Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) is the leaflet included in the pack with a medicine and must be read before taking the medicine. It is written for patients and gives information about taking or using a medicine.
