What is Lovima?

Lovima is a progestogen-only pill containing 75 micrograms of desogestrel. It is taken daily and provides effective contraception without oestrogen.

How Lovima Works

Lovima prevents pregnancy by:

• Preventing ovulation in most women.
• Thickening cervical mucus.

Lovima is over 99% effective when taken perfectly.

How to Take Lovima

• Take one tablet at the same time every day.
• Take packs continuously with no breaks.
• Swallow tablets whole with water.

Starting Lovima

• Immediate protection if started within the first 5 days of your cycle.
• If started later, condoms are required for the first 48 hours.

Missed Tablet Advice

• Less than 12 hours late: take the tablet immediately.
• More than 12 hours late: take the tablet as soon as possible and use condoms for 48 hours. (Emergency contraception is required if unprotected sex occurred.)

Bleeding Changes

Irregular bleeding, spotting, or absence of periods can occur. These changes are common and not dangerous. Bleeding usually improves after taking the pill for 3 months and continues to improve the longer you take it.

Possible side effects include:

• Headache.
• Nausea.
• Breast tenderness.
• Acne.
• Mood changes.

Who Can Take Lovima

Lovima may be suitable for women who:

• Cannot take oestrogen.
• Are breastfeeding.
• Prefer a daily oral contraceptive.

Who Should Not Take Lovima

You should not take Lovima if you are allergic to peanuts, soya or desogestrel or have lactose intolerance.

Unexplained vaginal bleeding.Lovima may not be suitable for women with certain medical conditions such as epilepsy, liver disease or a history of hormone sensitive tumours. We carry out a medical assessment before starting.
