Isotrex Gel is a prescription only topical acne treatment, which is applied to acne affected areas once or twice daily. The active ingredient of Isotrex is isotretinoin, which is a type of retinoid and is similar to vitamin A.
Isotrex is particularly useful for unblocking pores and clearing whiteheads and blackheads. It also reduces inflammation and pustule formation (infected spots).
Isotrex is a topical preparation applied to acne affected areas. It should not be ingested, and if in contact with the eyes, nose or mouth, should be washed off straightaway.
How to use
Apply a thin layer over acne affected areas once or twice daily. Continuous use for up to 8 weeks may be required before improvement takes place. Continue treatment long-term without stopping, although after 6 months, if acne has resolved, treatment can be stopped and restarted later, if required.
Wash hands after use.
Side effects and cautions
Isotrex often (in more than 1 in 10) produces reddening and slight irritation and inflammation of the skin. This occurs particularly in the first weeks of treatment, during which time reduced frequency of applications may be necessary. Inflammation tends to be more severe in sensitive areas of skin, such as the neck, and is made worse by over frequent applications, which do not improve effectiveness.
Isotrex should not be applied to inflamed, open, or infected areas, or in areas affected by eczema. Isotrex can make skin sun sensitive. Sun bathing and sun beds should be avoided and UV screening is advisable.
Pregnant women, and those of child bearing age at risk of pregnancy, and breast-feeding women should not use Isotrex. Effective contraception should be used where needed. Not for use in children before puberty.
In rare cases skin may be lightened or darkened by Isotrex use.
Use with other treatments
Other topical acne treatments should be applied at different times of the day. This will reduce the potential for inflammation. Not for use with Differin (adapalene), as this is another retinoid and therefore should not be used at the same time. Benzoyl peroxide, a non-prescription acne treatment, may reduce the effectiveness of Isotrex.
Patient information leaflet
The 'Patient Information Leaflet' supplied with the gel must be read before use.
