These digested food and drink particles, then travel through the intestines. By now they are very tiny, and can pass inside the walls of your gut, and into miniature blood vessels, called capillaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp; blood then passes directly from the walls of the intestines,&nbsp;to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishlivertrust.org.uk\/liver-information\/\">liver,<\/a> where it undergoes a process of detoxification. The liver acts as a huge filtration system \u2013 breaking down unwanted substances, chemicals, drugs, and alcohol \u2013 and then excretes its waste products in bile.&nbsp; The bile is squirted through the bile ducts, back into the intestines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bile is a green, or dark brown body fluid, you occasionally see when you vomit. When bile mixes with the food and drink residue in your stomach, this is what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/32498-why-is-fecal-matter-brown.html\">gives poo its brown colour<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brown comes from the iron pigment in red blood cells, which are inevitably destroyed in the liver detoxification process. This is completely normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"you-and-your-kidneys\">You and&nbsp;your kidneys<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Away from the liver, blood is also circulating around the body and passing through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/human-body-maps\/kidney\">kidneys<\/a>. The kidneys are also involved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ndt\/article\/32\/4\/588\/3604965\">break down of different substances<\/a> such as carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. Many different types of medication are also broken down in the kidney. However,&nbsp; one of their most important functions is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidney.org\/kidneydisease\/howkidneyswrk\">to regulate the amount of fluid in your body<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kidneys do this by regulating your sodium levels. Too much sodium, and you absorb more water to dilute the blood. Too little sodium and you absorb less water to concentrate the blood again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This why when you feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/44319-feeling-thirsty-how-drinking-water-satisfies-brain.html\">thirsty<\/a> \u2013 your blood sodium levels are raised,&nbsp; and your body is telling you, you need more fluid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversely if you drink too much, your sodium levels go down, and you will pass a lot&nbsp; of urine as your body tries to get rid of excess fluid, to increase your blood sodium levels again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"so-what-is-in-my-urine\">So, what <em>IS<\/em>&nbsp;in my urine?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So you can see from all this, <strong>your urine contains water, plus a whole range of metabolic waste products<\/strong>, which derive from both your liver and your kidney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/39453-urine-chemical-composition.html\">A 2013 scientific study<\/a> has revealed more than 3000 products in urine. These are listed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urinemetabolome.ca\/\">Urine Metabolome Database<\/a>. These are the metabolic breakdown products of hormones, vitamins, and enzymes.&nbsp; It also contains contaminants,&nbsp;from environmental products,&nbsp;food, drinks, drugs, and bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-colour-should-my-urine-be\">What colour should my urine&nbsp;be?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urine is normally pale yellow. It contains <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urobilin\">urobilin<\/a>, which is a bilirubin breakdown product, and originates from the liver. Your urine will look darker if you are dehydrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the urine changes colour:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/what-does-orange-urine-mean-3522281\">Orange<\/a> \u2013 this may be due to: high dose Vitamin B12, or for example the drugs phenazopyridine, or isoniazid, or, this could signify a liver or kidney problem.<strong>&nbsp;You should see your doctor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/urine-color\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20367333\">Pink\/red<\/a> \u2013 may be due to: eating too many\/too much carrots, beetroot, rhubarb; or to the drugs rifampicin, or phenazopyridine; or it may be due to blood in the urine. <strong>You should see a doctor.<\/strong>&nbsp; Blood in the urine can signify a serious cause, such as kidney disease, a urine infection, prostate disease, or a bladder tumour, and might appear once, sporadically, or persistently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-much-urine-should-i-pee\">How much urine should I pee?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most healthy adults produce around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livestrong.com\/article\/516316-what-is-normal-urinary-output-for-an-adult\/\">2L of urine per day<\/a> \u2013 but this does vary depending on how much fluid you consume, what you eat, how much you sweat etc ..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-often-should-i-pee\">How often should I pee?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The average person has a pee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/321461.php\">about 6 or 7 times a day<\/a>. Between 4 and 10 times is normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is assuming an average fluid intake of 2 litres per day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes people become aware they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bladderandbowel.org\/bladder\/bladder-conditions-and-symptoms\/frequency\/\">passing urine more frequently<\/a>. They can test the urine very easily there and then, and this gives a good indication if anything is wrong.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To do this they use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/qa\/what-does-a-dipstick-urinalysis-check-for\">urine dipsticks<\/a>. Urine dipsticks are thin, plastic strips which can be dipped into your urine and give instant results. They have little coloured squares on them, which change colour if certain disease markers are present. Urine tests are also available to buy online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/qa\/what-does-a-dipstick-urinalysis-check-for\">Urine dipsticks<\/a> test for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Calcium \u2013 may indicate kidney stones, or parathyroidism.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blood \u2013 may indicate urine infection cystitis, kidney\/bladder infections\/stones\/blockages, tumours in the renal tract, medications, prostate disease, or blood disorders. Sometimes urine may just be&nbsp; contaminated with menstrual blood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Glucose \u2013 may indicate diabetes, pregnancy, renal glycosuria.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Urobilinogen \u2013 may indicate hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver damage, haemolytic anaemia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bilirubin \u2013 may indicate liver disease, heavy drinking alcohol, fatty liver, diabetes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ketones \u2013 may indicate dehydration, a low carbohydrate diet, chronic vomiting and diarrhoea, an eating disorder, pregnancy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nitrates- kidney\/bladder infection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leucocytes \u2013 kidney\/bladder infections\/stones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creatinine \u2013 kidney failure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microabumin \u2013 diabetes, high blood pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pH \u2013 a neutral pH is 7.0. The higher the number, the more basic (alkaline) it is. The lower the number, the more acidic your urine is.
