How effective is Champix?
Smoking is notoriously difficult to give up. Most people who succeed try more than once. No matter what medicine is taken to help there must be a strong will to give up. Support from professionals, friends and family is also centrally important.
Champix is usually taken for a 12 week course during which time there should be no smoking. 4 weeks after finishing this course about 4 out of 10 people are not smoking. This reduces to 2 out of 10 after a year. Although this may not seem a particularly high success rate it is better than any alternative medicine. Champix is effective enough to be recommended for use in certain circumstances by NICE. It can be difficult to get Champix on the NHS as many GPs do not prescribe Champix either because they are not familiar with it or for reasons of cost or other reasons.
Champix as an aid to quitting smoking is more effective than nicotine replacement (Nicotine gum, inhalers or nasal sprays) or another prescription drug, buproprion.
Stopping smoking is not easy. Nicotine is highly addictive. Champix tablets reduce craving. Whilst a person is taking Champix they will experience reduced pleasure from smoking.
Champix Side effects
In order of frequency Champix side effects include
- Headache, difficulty sleeping, abnormal dreams
- Increased appetite, changes in the way things taste, dry mouth
- Sleepiness, tiredness, dizziness
- Vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, feeling bloated, stomach discomfort, indigestion, flatulence
Champix may have the potential to induce symptoms of depression and alterations in mood and behaviour. People with a history of significant psychiatric disorders should not take it. People who become depressed or otherwise cognitively of emotionally disturbed whilst taking Champix should stop taking it and consult a doctor. The frequency of these sorts of problems is low.
The dosage of Champix is built up slowly over the first 2 weeks using a starter pack.
Champix is a selective partial nicotine agonist. This means in some ways Champix acts in the body in the same way as nicotine. In doing this it blocks the effect of nicotine and stops smoking being pleasurable.
Dr Fox charges £40.00 for a starter pack. Some online clinics charge £140.00 . You will not find genuine Champix on prescription for lower cost anywhere in the UK.
