Ciprofloxacin Interactions

Ciprofloxacin antibiotic has potential interactions with several other medications.

  • Artemether with Lumefantrine
    Avoidance of quinolones advised by manufacturer of artemether/lumefantrine
  • Ciclosporin
    Increased risk of nephrotoxicity when quinolones given with ciclosporin
  • NSAIDs
    Possible increased risk of convulsions when quinolones given with NSAIDs
  • Strontium Ranelate
    absorption of quinolones reduced by strontium ranelate (manufacturer of strontium ranelate advises avoid concomitant use)
  • Theophylline
    Possible increased risk of convulsions when quinolones given with theophylline
  • Zolmitriptan
    quinolones possibly inhibit metabolism of zolmitriptan (reduce dose of zolmitriptan)
  • Antacids
    absorption of ciprofloxacin reduced by antacids
  • Calcium Salts
    absorption of ciprofloxacin reduced by calcium salts
  • Clozapine
    ciprofloxacin increases plasma concentration of clozapine
  • Coumarins Warfarin
    ciprofloxacin enhances anticoagulant effect of coumarins
  • Duloxetine
    Ciprofloxacin inhibits metabolism of duloxetine – vavoid concomitant use
  • Glibenclamide
    ciprofloxacin possibly enhances effects of glibenclamide
  • Iron
    absorption of ciprofloxacin reduced by oral iron
  • Methotrexate
    ciprofloxacin possibly reduces excretion of methotrexate (increased risk of toxicity)
  • Olanzapine
    ciprofloxacin possibly increases plasma concentration of olanzapine
  • Opioid Analgesics
    manufacturer of ciprofloxacin advises avoid premedication with opioid analgesics (reduced plasma concentration of ciprofloxacin) when ciprofloxacin used for surgical prophylaxis
  • Phenytoin
    ciprofloxacin increases or decreases plasma concentration of phenytoin
  • Probenecid
    excretion of ciprofloxacin reduced by probenecid (increased plasma concentration)
  • Ropinirole
    ciprofloxacin inhibits metabolism of ropinirole (increased plasma concentration)
  • Sevelamer
    bioavailability of ciprofloxacin reduced by sevelamer
  • Sucralfate
    absorption of ciprofloxacin reduced by sucralfate
  • Theophylline
    Ciprofloxacin increases plasma concentration of theophylline
  • Tizanidine
    Ciprofloxacin increases plasma concentration of tizanidine (increased risk of toxicity) – avoid concomitant use
