Important Information

Please read the important information below regarding DNA kits for paternity testing before starting the questionnaire.

How DNA tests work

If a man is the biological father of a child it will show up in the DNA. Biologically related people have similarities in their DNA and this can be used to prove a biological relationship.

DNA is a genetic fingerprint present in all living cells. DNA can be collected at home using mouth swabs similar to cotton buds rubbed firmly over the inner cheek.

The kit we supply contains swabs, forms to complete and instructions.

Once you have collected the DNA samples these are posted to the lab for processing in the envelope provided. The results are posted back to you. The results are close to 100% accurate.

Maternal participation is not required to carry out a paternity test.

The test kit can also be used to check maternity (the biological relationship between an alleged mother and child).

8 easy steps to collect your DNA sample

  1. Step 1

Do not drink coffee or tea, or use tobacco products for 4 hours prior to sampling. Samples containing coffee, tea or tobacco residues may not process properly!

  2. Step 2

Wash your hands and rinse subject's mouth three times with warm water (for infants - allow them to drink water from a bottle or wait 2 hours from last feeding).

  3. Step 3

Remove the first swab from the sterile packaging, taking care not to touch the tip of the swab. Collect cheek cells by rolling the tip of the sample collection swab firmly on the inside of both cheeks (30 times each or for about 1 minute). Be certain to move the swab over the entire inner cheek surfaces. This action should be firm but not aggressive and should cause no discomfort.

  4. Step 4

Repeat this process for the same individual with the second swab. You must submit two swabs per person.

  5. Step 5

Allow the swabs to air dry at room temperature for at least 15 minutes. To avoid contamination, do not allow the tips of the swabs to touch anything.

  6. Step 6

Place the used swabs in the appropriate sample collection envelope (do not put back in original plastic packaging) and ensure that the details required on the outside of the envelope are clearly completed including signature. Be sure to seal the envelope firmly.

  7. Step 7

Repeat this process for every individual being tested using a different swab and envelope for each person.

  8. Step 8

Once you have successfully collected all DNA samples, put them inside the reply envelope together with the completed sample collection and registration forms. It is very important that these are fully completed including payment details and signatures – failure to do so will delay your results. Tick each step as you complete them to ensure nothing is forgotten.

Fees are in addition to the cost of the sample collection kit and are paid when samples are returned to the processor for testing.
